April is Arab Heritage Month

April is Autism Awareness Month

As a school, we have a great many students with autism. It is our pleasure to support them in the very many classes they are represented in our school. Please inquire with your child's teachers to see what they are doing to honor World Autism Awareness Month and the theme, "Together We Stand for a World of Difference."

Scholastic Book Fair is Next Week!

Our Spring Book Fair will be held May 1st – May 5th in our Library Media Center. It will be open to our students during the school day.  This event is an opportunity for students of all ages to build their home libraries and further their love of reading. As always, all purchases benefit our school!
  • Our Book Fair offers a cash-free payment option called e-Wallet.
  • It is a convenient digital account that your child can use for shopping at our Fair. Grandparents, friends, and others can contribute, too!
  • Just a reminder that any unused e-Wallet funds can only be spent at The Scholastic Store Online or to fund an e-Wallet for a future Fair! Here a helpful video to help set one up for your child: eWallet Video
  • Families are welcome to come shop at the book fair on Thursday, May 4th during Report Card Night from 6:30pm -8pm.
  • Please note that new this year, tax will be charged on all book fair sales! One way to help kids think about this is that if they have an extra 10¢ for every dollar they plan to spend, they will have enough to cover the taxes.
Please visit our Book Fair homepage to learn more and get started with e-Wallet & online shopping: https://www.scholastic.com/bf/cordero

Thank you in advance for all your support. We look forward to an amazing book fair!

NJSLA Testing Begins Next Week!

The New Jersey Student Learning Assessments are critical to the success of our school. The NJSLA will take place during the month of May. All students in grades three through eight in general education, inclusion and behavior disabled will take them in English Language Arts and Mathematics.

All fifth and eighth grade students will also take the Science Assessment.

Over the past year, we have seen significant progress in our ELA and Math performance as noted in a recent nj.com article.

Testing schedules and specific assignments for each student have been sent to their JCPSNJ email. You can also ask your child's teachers to understand when they will assess each of the parts of the NJSLA.

We hope that you can help your child continue to progress through this assessment by ensuring they are in school on time and well-rested. On the days they test, student tests will begin at 9am. Late students will need to complete make-ups so they do not interrupt the testing environment.
Thank you for your time and cooperation.

What are Student Activities and Why is that always the fundraiser recipient?

As a school, we have a fund that helps support student activities that are not curriculum-driven such as those listed in the picture labeled "Student Activities."

Student Activity Funds have been used to purchase culturally-relevant novels for our students in multiple grades, support moving-on ceremony activities (Pre-K through eighth grade), the Festival of the Stars, and send our fifth grade to Medieval Times this year. That fund helps all of our students and we use almost $100000 a year to enrich their educational experiences. For instance, in grades 2-8, we used those funds to go to a STEM-themed skating activity and provide supplies for special events like the Winter Wonderland in the lower grades.

Every fundraiser we do throughout the year adds to that account in order to support those events. This is why every fundraiser states that they benefit "Student Activities." The Student Activities account is audited annually by the district and other authorities to ensure they are appropriately allocated and used. If you have any further questions about this account and any fundraiser, please reach out or see Mr. Stanton at the next PTA meeting.

REMINDERS

Appointments

We strongly encourage that you not make any appointments medical or otherwise during the school day. We understand that some situations cannot be avoided, however, the disruption to the school day for your child and the other children in their class a substantial every time you pull them out. Please note, if a student is taken out for an appointment they cannot return for the rest of the day.

Visitor Entry

Visitors to the building must make an appointment. All visitors to the school must enter through the metal detector at the main entrance on Erie St. and sign in at the security desk. This is a point of safety and protection for all of our students and staff. All doors outside are locked throughout the year and you may only enter through the main entrance in order to come into the school.

Important Updates to School Breakfast & Lunch

Please note that last year, all students were free for breakfast and lunch. This year, we will have breakfast in the classrooms for free (Grab & Go in grades 3-8). However, lunch is not free unless your child qualifies. To qualify, you must complete a lunch application. The link to the application is above. We hope every family can complete one. The more applications completed, the more likely we’d get more funding.

Lunch costs $3 for those who do not qualify.

Add money to your child’s account through: https://www.myschoolbucks.com/ver2/getmain?requestAction=home

Students may bring in lunch from home if they prefer not to have school lunch.

Entrance Procedures for the 2022-23 School Year

Please note that all students are returning for in-person instruction and we have made some adjustments.

Note: All Middle School Students will enter the alley entrance on Pavonia Ave. and go through the metal detector and bag check in the cafeteria. After clearing, students will report to their first-period classes and not their homerooms.

Grades Pre-K through 5 will pick up outside (first-period teachers in Grade 5 will pick up their students) on Thursday and Friday. Beginning Monday, September 12, students in grades 3-8 will go up on their own in their designated entrances.

Staggered Dismissal

At dismissal times, students will be dismissed from the same door they entered at the beginning of the day Students not participating in an afterschool program (CASPER) MUST be picked up promptly at the time below.

2:30 - Pre-K

2:40 - Grades K-2

2:45 - Grades 3-8

All students with permission to walk home by themselves should give that permission in writing to their child's teacher. NOTE: Children in grades PK through Grade 2 cannot go home by themselves.

Inclement Weather Entry

As we began last year, on days of heavy rain, below-freezing temperatures, and snow/sleet, we will open our entrances at 8:30 and send students grades 3-8 directly to their classrooms after scanning. Students in grades PK through Grade 2 will be brought to meet their teachers in the Gym.
